Tips on how to tile a ceiling
Tiling a ceiling with ceramic tiles is hard, but not impossible. A completely tiled bathroom will look finished, and will be much easier to maintain. If you are doing it yourself, here are the steps you should follow, so that your ceiling is perfectly tiled.
● First, cover your floor with cardboard so that if a ceiling tile falls it won't damage the floor. ● Then, build some T braces out of scrap lumbers, as high as your bathroom (from floor to ceiling) and as wide as your ceiling. This T-braces will hold in place the rows of tiles. ● Find the centre of your ceiling and mark it with a pencil or chalk. Draw perpendicular lines that run through the centre in the shape of a cross. ● Mix your thinset mortar in a bucket and wait for it to thicken. ● When the mortar is all set, with the help of a notched trowel spread a thin layer on the back of your first tile. In order to create some ridges in the mortar, use the end of the trowel. ● Place the tile in one of the corners that your perpendicular lines created in the centre of the ceiling. Move the tile back and front so that the mortar adheres to the ceiling. To keep the tile in place, hold it there with some painter's tape. Don't tape in the direction of your tiling. For example, if you tile from left to right, tape vertically. ● Continue tiling beside the first tile, following the same process, but don't forget to separate the tiles with small plastic spacers. Also, cut the tiles when you reach the edges of the ceiling. ● When the first row of tiles is complete, place the T-braces under it to secure it in place. Now you can remove the painter's tape. ● Continue with other rows until the entire ceiling is tiled. Place T-braces under each row and leave the tile to set for at least 24 hours. Then it's safe to remove the T-braces, the spacers and the remaining painter's tape. ● Prepare the grout by mixing it with water and start applying it between the tiles. Press it so that it enters in the lines created by the small spacers. Don't apply too much or else it will drip on the floor. Clean the tiles, let the grout dry and then clean the remaining residue. ● With a silicone gun, seal the edges of the tile in the corners and along the ceiling edges. You're done.
